करीब ढाई हजार साल पहले गौतम बुद्ध ने लोगों को बौद्ध धर्म से परिचित कराया था। गौतम बुद्ध का जन्म 563 ईसा पूर्व लुम्बिनी में हुआ। बोध गया में उन्हें ज्ञान की प्राप्ति हुई। सारनाथ में उन्होंने पहला उपदेश दिया। गौतम बुद्ध का महापरिनिर्वाण 483 ईसा पूर्व कुशीनगर में हुआ।

बौद्ध धर्म का विस्तार बहुत तेजी से हुआ और महापरिनिर्वाण के 500 साल के अंदर बौद्ध धर्म पूरे भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप में फैल गया और उसके बाद ये मध्य, पूर्वी और दक्षिण-पूर्वी एशिया में भी फैल गया।

बौद्ध धर्म विश्व का पांचवा सबसे बड़ा धर्म है। और दुनिया भर में करीब 50 करोड़ लोग बौध्ध धर्म के अनुयायी हैं। हालांकि कुछ लोगों का दावा है कि विश्व में बौद्ध धर्म को मानने वाले लोगों की तादात करीब 2 अरब है। दुनिया के करीब 200 देशों में बौद्ध अनुयायी रहते हैं। भूटान, जापान, वियतनाम, चीन, मंगोलिया, म्यान्मार, थाईलैण्ड, कम्बोडिया, लाओस, सिंगापुर, दक्षिण कोरिया, उत्तर कोरिया और श्रीलंका समेत कुल 13 देशों में बौद्ध धर्म 'प्रमुख धर्म' है।
